McAfee has released support for Microsoft Azure Files. Azure Files is an important part of Microsoft’s strategy to help customers migrate file servers and end-user data access to the cloud.
As customers take on their cloud transformation projects, they may be resistant to moving their most important data to cloud locations due to several concerns such as:
- Security and compliance concerns
- Data visibility and loss prevention (DLP)
- Not having clear understanding of user behavior and threats in the cloud
Azure Files provides a transparent way for organizations to synchronize data to Azure. End users may not realize that data is no longer on internal servers but is in fact stored in Azure. Providing security services beneath Azure Files helps protect end users as they use data in the cloud.
This is a major advantage for organizations, but to address the risks above, McAfee and Microsoft explored the customer concerns and were able to collaborate to extend the MVISION Cloud for Azure solution and extend it to support Azure Files.
One of the top concerns that Microsoft customers shared to the Azure Files team surrounded a compliance requirement by customers. They wanted malware protection for Azure Files so they could be assured that malware would not infect cloud resources (or the users, applications, or customers that might be using it).
The MVISION Cloud team was then able add support for Azure Files to solve this need. However, the since the MVISION Cloud security platform also supported DLP and Behavior Analytics, the Azure Files customers will also receive this benefit.
The following short demonstration shows the simplicity of running a scan against an Azure Files storage location. In the video one can see the scan is transparent to the end user; it is run via API call made from the MVISION Cloud for Azure service. These scans can also be extended to add DLP policies to identify sensitive data. DLP policies can help prevent data loss or identify sensitive data that may need more protections.
For customers who already own MVISION Cloud, extending protection to Azure is easy. As mentioned, the connection to Azure is through a simple API connection. The solution then monitors configuration of Azure assets, provides DLP and malware protection to Azure Blob and Azure Files, and also is a part of a threat prevention / anomaly detection engine that helps identify unusual activity and threats (such as compromised accounts, impossible travel, insider threats, and threat activity) across Azure and any other cloud services the customer is monitoring.
