Gartner independently defines CASB as “on-premises, or cloud-based security policy enforcement points, placed between cloud service consumers and cloud service providers to combine and interject enterprise security policies as the cloud-based resources are accessed. CASBs consolidate multiple types of security policy enforcement. Example security policies include authentication, single sign-on, authorization, credential mapping, device profiling, encryption, tokenization, logging, alerting, malware detection/prevention and so on.”

In its announcement, Gartner explains, “The Gartner Peer Insights Customers’ Choice is a recognition of vendors in this market by verified end-user professionals, taking into account both the number of reviews and the overall user ratings.” To ensure fair evaluation, Gartner maintains rigorous criteria for recognizing vendors with a high customer satisfaction rate.


For this distinction, a vendor must have a minimum of 50 published reviews with an average overall rating of 4.2 stars or higher. McAfee received 102 reviews, more than twice the next vendor in the CASB category, and an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 for McAfee Skyhigh Security Cloud as of May 15, 2018.

I led the implementation. The initial scope was to detect shadow IT and then evolve our security policies and best practices to either better enable the business or stop risky behavior. Later down the road, the strategy involved leveraging Skyhigh for the true CASB capabilities to secure collaboration capabilities for Box. Overall the architecture is well designed, the deployment was relatively fast and easy. We had a very rigorous scorecard against which we evaluated these vendors and 1 other came really close to Skyhigh. The differentiator was in 1) the roadmap/vision and how well it aligned with our strategy at the time and 2) Skyhigh always worked, in real time. There weren’t any appliances to manage, load balance, etc. allowing the team to focus on what matters – security vs. infrastructure management.

Implementation was fairly easy, and the results were especially helpful for our purposes. The relationship with Skyhigh networks is very strong and driven by exemplary customer experience. We continue to work with them on several initiatives and monitor their growth in this area. The sales and technical staff were always available and able to answer any questions or get the answers to any questions. The implementation team was customer focused and very knowledgeable.
