There’s an app for almost everything today, and in many cases hundreds of apps have overlapping functionality. With so many choices, it can be difficult to discover the right app, or to keep up with the latest trends in technology. But over time, people tend to gravitate toward applications that offer the most value and best fit while discontinuing their use of apps that don’t.
It is this idea that led us to think that, by measuring usage patterns across thousands of cloud services for over 15 million users, we could help identify the up-and-coming solutions that are on the path to mainstream adoption based on their growth rates. Rather than trying to curate a list of the top apps based on various marketing claims, why not leverage hard data and look at which apps people are actually using?
The top 10 list
To compile the list we looked at active users for over 10,000 services in our Cloud Registry across over 15 million users from Q3 to Q4 of 2014. We then calculated growth rates for each of these services and ranked them, excluding services that didn’t meet a minimum threshold of users . (ie we don’t include apps that grew 800% from 1 to 7 users).
The fastest-growing cloud services on the list have doubled the number of active users in a single quarter, and if they continue their growth, they could rival more established players in the years to come. If you have a project or need in one of these categories it’s worth looking at these apps given how quickly they’re attracting users.
